Welcome Back

P1B Jo & P1

Dear Parents/Carers

It was lovely to welcome all the children back to school after the Summer holidays.  All the children looked so smart in their uniforms and it was good to see so many wearing black footwear for indoor and outdoors.  All of Primary 1 at Roslin and Bilston looked so grown up after their nursery experiences.

During the holidays we have had the gym hall, staff base and meeting room painted.  It really brightens up the school as the gym is in a central position.  We cleared out some of the old furniture and bought some bright new tables/chairs and resources.  The P7s are enjoying having new blue chairs!  Our next job is to tidy up the music room and we are in the process of moving nursery resources from the music room into the 2 containers in the playground.  I feel strongly that it is very important to create stimulating, engaging environments for the children to learn in.  Thank you to all the staff who have worked hard preparing the school for the first day back.

We continue to be proud of the behaviour of our pupils.  Next week all classes will be sending home their own expectations and rules from their own class and their reward system. Our school ethos and culture ensures we support children’s learning and social and emotional needs.  While we recognise the vast majority behave well, like all schools we experience low level inappropriate behaviour and on occasion more challenging behaviours from children experiencing particular difficulties.

After consulting with the pupils and staff we have decided to stop using Good to be Green.  Some of the children were anxious if they got an amber or red card and we didn’t see enough positive impact from this strategy.  Across the whole school we are now using the following system.  If a child needs a reminder from the teacher about behaviour they will:

  1. 1st warning from teacher
  2. Thinking time – pupil to think about their behaviour
  3. Reflection time – each area will have a reflection time chair where they will sit and reflect on what they have done
  4. Senior Management Team
  5. Head teacher

We feel this links in very well to our new system of

YOYOB

You    Own   Your   Own   Behaviour

We piloted this last term and the children responded very enthusiastically.  We are proud to be a nurturing school where we strive to create an engaging, safe and caring environment for learning.

It is exciting that the building of the new Bilston School has started.  All the children at Bilston have enjoyed seeing the builders busy each day.  We are having Building Site Safety Talks next week at both Roslin and Bilston.  I know the children are looking forward to it.  Work was done during the holidays in the playground at Roslin and as a result of this, fences have been erected around grass areas that need improved.  The authority is taking care of these improvements.

We have an exciting term ahead and I look forward to seeing all the children enjoying their learning and meeting you at events during the school year.
